State Rail Plan
Overview
The 2009 Georgia State Rail Plan (SRP) has been prepared by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Intermodal Programs Division. The 2009 SRP is an effort to combine the state’s planning for freight (Class I and shortline railroads) and passenger rail into one single coordinated effort and is broader in its scope than previous plans. The 2009 SRP is based on and complies with the requirements of the current federal guidelines and planning requirements established in The Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act (PRIIA) of 2008. The SRP covers the goals and vision for rail transportation in the State of Georgia.
The 2009 SRP provides an overview of the opportunities and impacts of rail transportation. The SRP includes the investment needs for Class I railroads, shortline railroads, and future planned passenger rail service. It deals with passenger rail elements with emphasis on the state-wide rail connectivity framework and potential “hub locations” for intercity and high-speed rail service. It also provides a brief summary of the economic benefits of rail programs with a national perspective as well as the state’s recently completed study on Investments in Tomorrow’s Transportation Today (IT3). The benefits of high-speed rail specifically related to the southeast high speed corridor are discussed in this rail plan.
Finally, the 2009 SRP includes policy statements that the State of Georgia needs to consider and adopt for future freight and passenger rail planning and implementation.
