Planning Organizations

Regional Commissions

The Georgia State Planning Act of 1989 included as a key element the formation of 12 regional commissions throughout the state.  These organizations, in an effort to yield more effective and efficient provision of community facilities and services, provide planning and technical assistance municipal governments within their jurisdictions.

GDOT also contracts with 12 RCs (all but the Atlanta Regional Commission) to provide bicycle and pedestrian transportation services.  Some example projects include:

• Regional bicycle and pedestrian plans
• Safe Routes to School Plans
• Rails-to-Trails Feasibility Studies
• Purchasing bike route signage and coordinating their installation
• Bike route and trail mapping
• Walkable community design workshops

Metropolitan Planning Organizations

Metropolitan Planning Organizations are federally designated agencies created in urban areas containing more than 50,000 people.  Fifteen MPOs operate within Georgia.  They are charged with conducting comprehensive, coordinated planning processes to determine the transportation needs of their respective constituencies, and prioritizing and programming projects (including bicycle and pedestrian projects) for federal funding.  The MPOs conduct open public meetings annually for input into the development of the Long Range Plans and Transportation Improvement Programs – check out the website for your local MPO to learn how to get involved.
