Rail
The Georgia Rail System is made up of passenger rail, commuter rail and freight rail service, which consists of over 5,000 route miles.
Passenger Rail
The Passenger Rail Program involves two distinct kinds of rail transportation:
- Commuter Trains - Provides rail service for commuters traveling to and from the Atlanta area.
- Intercity Trains - Connects communities throughout Georgia and the Southeast.
Proposed Commuter Rail
The Proposed Commuter Rail Program involves a 425-mile system that will use seven communter lines to transport people to and from work. Intercity trains will link nine of Georgia largest cities with the Atlanta and Macon areas.
Freight Rail
Georgia's Freight Rail System consists of Class I railroads operated by CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Corporation and Shortline railroads which are managed by 24 independent or short-line operators.
State Rail Plan
The State Rail Plan is an effort to combine the state’s planning for freight (Class I and shortline railroads) and passenger rail into one single coordinated effort.
