Southwest Georgia Multi-County Transportation Study
The Georgia Department of Transportation has completed the Southwest Georgia Multi-County Transportation Study. The project was conducted in coordination with Crisp, Dooly, Macon, Peach, Sumter, and Worth Counties, multiple cities, and planning agencies within the study area. The purpose of the study was to identify and recommend transportation improvements necessary to provide safe and efficient movement of people and goods through the year 2035.
The ability of the transportation system to meet future travel needs is essential to the economic viability of this study area. The study identified and documented transportation improvements that complemented state, regional, and local objectives regarding economic development and quality of life throughout the area. The recommendations considered were multi-modal and could potentially involve many project types including safety improvement, roadway widenings, new roadway connections, bicycle/pedestrian improvements, railroad and railroad crossing improvements, and transportation system management projects (e.g. traffic signal and intersection improvements).
Work was initiated in October 2008 and completed in October 2010. Throughout the study, the public was given opportunities to participate in the transportation planning process. Several public outreach strategies were employed, including stakeholder interviews, project fact sheets, questionnaires, comment forms, and this study website. Additionally, as a subset of the Peach County Long-Range Transportation Plan, two separate transportation studies were completed: the Russell Parkway Extension Study and the Fort Valley Bypass Study.
