Press Release - November 9, 2006

GAINESVILLE – Georgia DOT announces the speed limit on SR 20 from Cooper/Ozora Road to Plantation Boulevard will be lowered from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. The speed limit change will be in effect throughout the current construction project to widen State Route 20 in Grayson.

“In our active work zones the speed limit is lowered by 10 miles per hour but this change lowers the speed limit on State Route 20 twenty four hours a day throughout the life of the project,” explained Teri Pope, DOT Communications Officer. “It is a safety decision. For the safety of people driving through the area and for our employees in the area, it is absolutely imperative that drivers slow down in this construction zone. There will be dozens of pieces of equipment and people working in or near State Route 20 at all times of the day. We must maintain a slower, consistent pace of traffic.”

New speed limit signs with flags attached and speed reduction warning signs will be in place to warn motorists of the change. “Remember by Georgia law, that fines are doubled in a work zone and that is for each offense up to $2,000 per offense. It will benefit your pocket and your safety for you to slow down and pay extra attention through this work zone and all other work zones in Georgia,” said Pope. (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-188)
